Em inglês, o artigo definido “the” é um determinante que introduz um substantivo ou se refere a algo específico. Seu uso possui um conjunto complexo de regras, a maioria delas são semelhantes àquelas usadas em português para os respectivos artigos definidos: o, a, os, as. Assim, este post visa mostrar algumas destas regras para uso do artigo definido no inglês. De maneira geral, o artigo definido é usado na frente de um substantivo quando acreditamos que o interlocutor sabe exatamente a que estamos nos referindo. Confira 13 regras para usar “THE” na língua inglesa no seu texto seja, post, resumo de congresso, artigo científico, projeto ou resumo da dissertação / tese.

1. Porque existe apenas um, por exemplo:

• Vatican City is protecting the Pope from coronavirus.
• The President of Ireland was formally elected by most of Irish people.
• After work, they stretched their arms to the sun.

2. Com superlativos (por serem únicos):

• The Eiffel Tower is the tallest building in France.
• Mai Khao is the longest beach in Phuket.

3. Porque existe apenas um no contexto:

• Successful cases were reported in the Diabetes Center of London University. (o único centro de pesquisa em diabetes desta universidade)
• They live near the church. (tem uma só na cidade)
• All pieces of equipment were taken to the beach. (praia do local de estudo)

4. Porque já foi mencionado:

• A male had severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The patient was 39 years old according to physicians.

5. Antes de substantivo no singular indicando todo um grupo, que pode também ser escrito sem o artigo se o substantivo estiver no plural:

• “The heart has four chambers.” Ou “Hearts have four chambers.”
• “The human has developed science.” Ou “Humans have developed science.”
• “The yellow-eyed penguin is found only in New Zealand.” Ou “Yellow-eyed penguins are found only in New Zealand.”

6. Quando indica um grupo de pessoas:

• Livelihood has been challenging for the poor. (os pobres)
• Our prime concern was to help the disabled. (os deficientes)
• The elderly were impaired when recognizing anger and sadness. (os idosos)

7. Antes de instrumentos musicais, meios de transporte e comunicação ou serviços:

• The guitar has been widely used in music therapy. (instrumento musical)
• The train emerged in the XVIII and XIX centuries. (meio de transporte)
• The radio is a powerful communication tool. (meio de comunicação)
• Many requests for service have been turned down by the police. (serviço)

8. Com nomes de países que têm as palavras Kingdom, States, Republic e Islands ou com nome no plural:

• At that time, the United Kingdom was involved in numerous wars.
• Among those, the Czech Republic had the lowest proportion of senior specialists.
• This paper reports results of on-farm experiments in the Philippines.

9. Com nome de formações geográficas como cadeias de montanhas, grupos de ilhas, rios, mares, oceanos e canais:

• Sea surface salinity is regulated by fluvial influx from the Himalayas.
• The Amazon plays major roles in biodiversity, climate, and livelihood.
• The Panama Canal was built to span from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

10. Edifícios ou obras de arte conhecidas:

• The Taj Mahal is a splendid mausoleum in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India.
• There are similarities between the Mona Lisa and the Virgin and Child.

11. Organizações internacionais:

• The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has jurisdiction over disputes between nations.
• Policies and principles have been advocated by the UN in fostering democracy. (Nações Unidas).

12. Nomes de jornais, além de hotéis, bares ou restaurants que não sejam o nome dos proprietários:

• That photo was first published in the Washington Post in 2004.
• In 1974, a fire in the Joelma Building killed 189 and injured more than 320 people.
• The Hard Rock Café was founded in 1971 in London by two American expatriates.

13. Nomes de famílias:

• The Obamas left the White House at the beginning of 2017.
• Portuguese crown passed by marriage from the Braganças to the Hapsburgs.
• The Windsors have ruled Britain for over 100 years.
